Hyundai recently released a new promo for the i30 N (which may also be called the Elantra GT N or Elantra N GT). Remember that the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is dead and that, to put this succinctly, the Tiburon is being reincarnated as a VW Golf fighter in order to be the new performance flagship of a brand that just moved its best models into a new banner, plus this model will be the world’s introduction to Hyundai’s version of SRT or Nismo known as “N .” So it’s not like 100% of Hyundai’s enthusiast credibility is riding in the driver seat of a hatchback...

I still feel like my speculations are still very accurate on this model, so feel free to check out this post which contains !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I heard Hyundai is working on a model to sit below the 1-series and 2-series designated as the ///N0. I’m kidding, but this N thing lends itself to so many fun jokes. I’m excited for all this stuff!

Hyundai has enthusiast credibility? And not only did they mimic BMW with their performance division name and colors, but they also Just added a 0 to a name that BMW is currently using. Did some Chinese conglomerate buy Hyundai?

Had two RWD V8 sedans, a 300 hp plus sportscar for under $30k, just put a manaul into a 201 hp ultra-beige compact sedan, have a GTI/ST fighter coming out next year and said they would build an RS fighter if people ask for something more hardcore, are working on a better Veloster, and are going to build the smallest pickup for the US market. The Genesis brand will have two twin-turbo V6 RWD/AWD premium sedans entering the US market next year and said EVERY model from Genesis will be on RWD-based platforms, and are preparing performance hybrids of those models to head Genesis’ own performance arm. I also think they moved up production on that Genesis Coupe as well. On top of all that, Kia has a RWD V8 sedan, a sport sedan arriving next year, as well as turbo versions of the Rio and Soul on the way. All these things within the next two years...

So, not much cred right now but you have to give some kudos to a manufacturer that is completely starting over with all their vehicles and offering about 9 unique models over the next two years focused on pleasing enthusiasts.

I am more or less interesting in what RWD stuff they will be releasing.

However if they make a AWD Focus RS competitor on the cheap then I am interested.

They’re doing what everyone else has been doing for the last 10-15 years. Not really exciting to me especially considering the shit they’ve put out in the past. If they’re putting out the same stuff as Ford and VW, why would anyone buy a Hyundai over proven performers? Price is the only benefit, but these aren't much if at all cheaper than their competitors.

But it’s about variety, this is exciting because it means that the proven performers can’t rest because there is something chasing after them. Competition is how we get better cars at better prices. The great thing about this stuff being from Hyundai is that they are quick to change products due to feedback and flexibility since they manufacture their own steel. So we can expect huge changes in the next Focus and Golf if this new i30 is right in line with them.

Hope that this GTI/ST fighter is a great car and people avidly ask for a higher performing version.

A turbo Soul? Hah! I had a 2011 Soul as a hauling car, it was great. I put 100k miles on it, sold it to my sister, who has been driving it for a few years and another 30-40k miles without a hitch. Turbo all the things! Then stop, and replace them with V8's!

You could consider the shit that Ford put out in the past, and the shit that VW is putting out. Car companies get better if they want to stay competitive. Considering that Hyundai is strangely the 4th largest car company in the world, this kind of innovation is kinda cool.

That would be great, but I don't think VW or Ford really care what Hyundai is doing.

The current GTI is considered one of the best ever. And Forf has been making performance cars for longer than Hyundai has even been a company. It would be great if Hyundai was innovating and pushing other manufacturers further. The problem is they aren't. They're following what everyone else has been doing, but at a cheaper price with more compromises.

Just because it’s considered one of the Best GTI’s doesn’t mean it’s a good car, just better than some less good cars. Then again, I’m a staunch believer that VW is basically total crap, and I even considered a GTI to the point of test driving one.

Ford had it’s bad years in there. It’s only gotten really good since, what, 2009?

Anyway, think hard about what could be considered innovation in a car company these days, much less in high volume performance vehicles, and there’s really not much to be done but copy someone better. The new Mustang had to copy the Camaro and the Corvette to get really good, Corvette had to go way upscale and copy Ferrari to get better than it was. I mean, really, until performance hybrid becomes a common man dealer showroom stock word, you can only really count a brand’s innovation against itself anymore.

Not an actual Tiburon. I meant that a sporty FWD vehicle is about to become the leading performance car in the Hyundai lineup again. That was a silly comparison, sorry for the confusion.

So the GTI has never been good, the only way to innovate is to copy someone else, which is cool [looks up innovate in the dictionary], the Mustang GT350R with it’s flat plane crank OHC V8 is copying the Camaro and Corvette (at the same time), and the Corvette (which starts at $55k) is as upscale as a Ferrari.

I think we’re on a different level here.

That was a nice way to not read or understand what I wrote, so, you know, thanks for that, I guess?

Yeah, the GTI sucks balls. I’ve driven them, they aren’t good. They might be good for the segment, but they aren’t good cars.

As for innovation, and missing what I said, no, I don’t believe innovation is copying someone else, I said that there isn’t much room for innovation in high volume cars these days. I said there is not much to be done, and so companies are left to copying others.

BMW came up with an innovative way to make carbon fiber in production vehicles, yes. And they build a low volume grocery getter with some of the innovation they used. Not a high volume car by any means, especially if the left over stock is anything to say. Read what I wrote, not what you think I wrote.

Yes, the Mustang copied the Mustang of old to make a flat plane crank V8 that they used to make. And they copied the Camaro in going to IRS because the straight axle was at the limit of what it could do. And yes, Corvette is trying all manner of suspension and aero tricks that you see on Ferrari and Lambo and other very expensive cars to make a more reasonable, high volume car better. And Ferrari is copying GM in magnetorheological suspension systems to get better.

We’ve reached a point in the technology of cars at high volume is much much less in innovation, and more in perfecting tech that exists and adapting it to more broad uses. I’m an engineer in defense, so my view of innovation is likely skewed by what is actual cutting edge, and what is trickle down, like BMW’s i8 and i3.
